Marston’s & LiketoBe

At Marston’s we understand the pressure that parents, teachers, influencers and students are facing when gathering information to help them, to help young people, make decisions about their future education and career   choice. Partnering with LiketoBe provides us with the opportunity to help to clear some of the uncertainties, which many may have, around the careers available in hospitality. The LiketoBe online networking platform provides a place where questions can be asked and answered in real time, helping to remove the myths that can surround apprenticeships and careers. Engaging with students, at a time when they are thinking about their next steps, is really important to us; for many, hospitality is still seen as a low skilled, low pay work environment which means young people perceive working in hospitality as just a stop gap or a way to earn cash whilst studying towards a ‘real’ profession or career. Our aim is to dispel this perception and highlight the...

Open up the world of engineering to your students

Jane Austin, Head of Engineering at Network Rail explains how LiketoBe is helping her and Network Rail to inspire the next generation of engineers. I have supported and wanted to be involved with LiketoBe because there are just not enough girls and boys who want to become engineers, the simple point is we need more of our younger generation to want to be engineers and how can we be part of making this change. LiketoBe is a great opportunity and way to be able to encourage children to become engineers.  Why, because they will have access to qualified engineers that can answer and support their questions and enable them to understand what engineers really do. We need to help the education departments, as not many teachers have ever been an engineer, therefore are they really promoting it and if they are, how are they promoting it?  The point is I do not think our younger generation really understand what these jobs are, what can an engineer do, what is available to them a...

Removing the Biggest Barrier to Young People’s Aspirations

We can give the next generation the spark to ready them for the future says Antony Jinman.  What would you like to be when you leave school? Were you asked as a child? Perhaps you remember what you said. A footballer; farmer; engineer; doctor; nurse; astronaut?  Whatever the response, the point is that our dreams matter. Becoming a physiotherapist because an early love of rugby was nurtured is a great thing. An engineer looking back fondly at childhood memories of building mighty cityscapes from Lego is a great thing.  Yet so many young people aren’t aware of the career options available, lack the role models (beyond celebrities and sports starts perhaps!) to inspire them and don’t know the practical steps to start considering how to get from where you want to be.  Antony's Career Journey   We’re in the midst of exam season, a time of stress for many when pathways are set and the next steps are taken, academic or otherwise. For me it certainl...
