● The LikeToBe event, TIC Talks: Our Planet, launched their unique online platform that directly connects employers, educators, and students, bridging the gap between education and employment.
● The Transformational Inspirational Career (TIC) Talks encouraged today’s students to consider careers they may not have on their radar yet.
● Other speakers included representatives from Rolls Royce, Bristol Energy Cooperative, Pure Planet, and Bristol is Open.
On 15th November 2019, a repertoire of speakers including wildlife TV presenter Chris Packham and inuit actor and speaker Johnny Issaluk, along with national and international C-suite businesspeople spoke at LikeToBe’s TIC Talk at the Bristol Cathedral Choir School.
The theme of the day was ‘Our Planet’, with talks sharing the variety of environmentally focused careers available in the face of the current climate crisis. With positive feedback from students and speakers alike, a new generation is excited and motivated for their futures.
Patricia Patilla Sanchez from Rolls Royce commented:
“It was inspirational. I wish I could have stayed for longer and seen the rest of the talks. The initiative is brilliant. We should be doing more to reach younger people and be running lots of events like these. What I liked the most was the diversity of the subject for the students. It wasn’t just from one perspective such as engineering, it really showed the full array of opportunities of work around being sustainable.”
Julie Snell, CEO of Bristol Is Open and TIC Talk speaker said:
“I felt privileged to be invited to speak to the younger generation of Bristol at the LiketoBe event. Encouraging our next generation to consider the different career roles around our Smart City and Carbon Neutral activities will be key to the future.”
Expert speakers shared on a broad range of topics including power production, transport and travel, climate change, process and procedure and environmental impact concluding with a panel discussion on future innovations and solutions. Merle Hall (Kinneir Dufort), Chris Speller (Bristol Energy Cooperative), Caroline Macdonald (OggaDoon,) Jo de Montgros (Everoze), Sam Speller (The Lazy Leek), and Richard Roberts (Pure Planet) completed the speaker line up.
Antony Jinman, Founder of LikeToBe and event organiser, said:
“We are incredibly pleased with the success of the TIC Talks: Our Planet. Our aim was to encourage and challenge young people, and huge thanks must go to our wonderful speakers who did just that. But we’re not stopping there - our next TIC Talk will be in March, and before then we’re heading off to Antarctica on a project with schools around the country. We’re determined to change the way young people think about careers.”[1]
The TIC Talks will be available to watch on the LikeToBe platform which is free for students and educators. The platform also facilitates resources, conversations, and networking for students and employers who work or are interested in working in sustainability careers.
